Let's talk over gumbo....

We no sooner got off the plane from Houston to New Orleans when we found ourselves getting dropped at 2301 Orleans Avenue in New Orleans to have a long awaited meal at "Dooky Chase Restaurant." I had that flitter in my chest when we got out of the car because I had longed to meet Ms. Chase. Her memory envelopes the neighborhood with the art, memorial's, and of course, Dooky Chase restaurant, where Leah & Dooky's children still serve up time tested Louisiana recipes!

It was an odd time because Lars and I just flew into the city and had this excruciating cab ride that took nearly TWO HOURS!! Accident and a very scared cab driver with no gps?! I swear! Anyway, I used to be a server, so I know that 'time' between lunch and dinner is not always great for servers. None the less, you could just smell the soul food when you entered this very old school spot where the art just makes you smile! I mean look at Obama fixing' to chow on that gumbo!!

This art piece is actually in the median across the street from their restaurant. Homage to a legend. How's that for wise words - "Pray, work hard, and do for others." oxoxo

"I like to think we changed the course of America in this restaurant over a bowl of gumbo." - Dooky Chase

Obama & Gumbo

That's love...

This was the piece right by our table. LOVE!

Let's talk food.... my only regret is not getting a bowl, but a cup of gumbo. I wanted to also order an entree, so I had to go with red beans and rice with a couple pieces of fried chicken. The gumbo was so simple. I really think it was perfection. See that little scoop of white rice? I should have asked, but even that white rice was like the best rice I ever tasted. A nice, thin broth that has that all day, deep roux flavor. No okra. I like. I experienced it. Can you tell? I greeted it. Gave thanks for it. Used all of my senses before tasting. Winked at Leah up above and shared a spoonful with Lars.

God bless you Leah and Dooky Chase!

Can you smell it!!

You must be able to see in this picture how incredibly simple, yet flavorful and soulful this dish is! I shared a few bites with Lars, but he enjoyed his seafood platter as I slipped into my own world, tasting each bite and thinking about all of the greatness that has gathered in this space, changing America by talking over gumbo! Amen!

I ate every bit!!!

Thank you, Princess Chase! It was everything I imagined! 5 kisses blown up to heaven!
